A performer, educator, and doctoral candidate, Korean guitarist Bokyung Byun enjoys a reputation as one of the most sought-after artists in the world, sparked by nearly one dozen first-place finishes in international competitions and proven by her numerous performances across Asia and North America. Known for her performances that celebrate new, contemporary compositions alongside traditional repertoire, her performing is celebrated byClassical Guitar Magazineas “confident and quite extraordinary.”
Ms. Byun holds many first-prize competitive finishes, including the distinction of being the first female winner of the prestigious JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition. Recognition from these wins has led to numerous concerti performances, including with the Buffalo Philharmonic, West Los Angeles Symphony, and New Juilliard Ensemble, among others.
With her perspectives, techniques, and experience, a bevy of festivals, workshops, and guitar societies look to Ms. Byun as a solo recitalist and for masterclasses, including the Kumho Young Artist Series, Philadelphia Guitar Festival, Toronto Guitar Weekend, Guitar Montréal, and Knoxville Guitar Society. She has served as pedagogue to students at the Aspen Music Festival and the Music Advancement Program at The Juilliard School.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Bokyung Byun began playing guitar at the age of six. She is now based in Los Angeles, where she is pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Southern California as the recipient of the prestigious International Artist Fellowship. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School.
